A SUCCESSFUL YURT REPAIR
yurt repair 2023
Thank you all for donations of money and labor to replace our yurt cover. Pacific Yurt sold Hokoji a higher quality yurt cover than the original; resistant to UV and a heavier fabric to withstand wind and snow. A special thanks to Chris Erb for leading the work crew in replacing the top.
EMERGENCY YURT REPAIR NEEDED:
Dear Friends of Hokoji:
The past year (2022) has seen the re-animation of the Board of Directors of Hokoji with the intention of carrying forward the legacy of our founder, Kobun Chino Otogawa. The Board of Directors hopes to do this largely by ensuring the physical and financial sustainability of the Hokoji zendo, community house, and yurt as places to continue and deepen zen practice. Equally important are sustaining our sangha, a community of individuals dedicated to and exploring zen practice. Our six-member Board hopes to share in the administrative and operational tasks necessary to keep Hokoji thriving. We have elected officers, updated our by-laws, established, and communicated new policies and administrative practices, and working with friends, have updated, and are maintaining our website. Please visit us at www.hokojitaos.org for more information and schedule updates. We are reestablishing our meditation and retreat schedule as we move into post-covid, in-person gatherings.
We currently have an emergency infrastructure need: a new covering for the yurt, which was originally purchased in 1983 and donated to Hokoji in 2010 or so. As the attached picture illustrates, the vinyl roof has retracted, and the walls are taking on some water. A tarp covers the major gap currently, but this is a temporary solution, which may not last out the snowfalls of a Northern New Mexico winter. In addition, the interior seams of the yurt need refurbishing, and the fiberglass insulation below the yurt needs replacement as it is being shredded by time and wild creatures. In addition, the entrance to the community house is rotting, and there are large exterior cracks near the buttresses of the zendo.
The Costs
Our goal is to raise $20,000 for yurt refurbishment, the Community House entry wall, and plaster patching on the exterior zendo walls. We appeal to friends and members of our larger sangha for assistance to refurbish and maintain Hokoji.

Overview
The Hokoji Community House has been a gathering place for sangha since Hokoji’s beginnings in the early 1980s. Over the last year, we raised enough money to repair the central living room roof. The central living room roof caused significant heat loss resulting in large heating expenses during the Arroyo Seco winters. Our resident teacher and long-time contractor, Ian Forsberg, kindly offered his expertise and his crew to do the repairs cost effectively and with an emphasis on energy conservation.
