Hokoji Phoenix Light Temple a place to practice zazen
Our focus is sitting as a community to share silent illumination
We welcome you to come just sit and engage in the ceremony and caretaking of the temple with us.
"Hokoji belongs to those who use it."
— Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi, Founder and Friend
Hokoji sits at an altitude of 8,030 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Taos, New Mexico, below El Salto Mountain, which Kobun named “Daisho-Zan” or “Great Holy Mountain.” We invite students and zazen practitioners of all ages to join our community.
Hokoji was founded and survives on generosity. Through the spiritual, material, and monetary contributions of those too many to mention here, the temple community quietly grows and nourishes. Your dana (donations) and volunteering are welcome.
Evening zazen: every Thursday at 5:30 pm. • Extended morning zazen: 3/15, 9:30 to noon • Hokoji is open every day.
